Fifth Annual Classical
Idol Competition

The evolution of Worcester Schubertiade to Vox New England also brings changes to
our Classical Idol Competition.
The Competition is now exclusively for classical voice with four divisions
awarding prize money to each of the four division winners:

High School
College
Graduate School
Emerging Professional

This year’s competition will take place on Sunday, November 10, 2019
at the First Baptist Church of Worcester
111 Park Avenue, Worcester, MA 01609

The last day to register is Sunday, November 3, 2019 by midnight.
All entrants will receive their audition time by Tuesday, November 5, 2019.
Audition times cannot be changed.

Rules and Registration Form

Competition date is Sunday, November 10, 2019. The competition will take place at the First Baptist Church, 111 Park Ave, Worcester, MA.

ENTRANTS

High School Division

  • Must be a high school student between the ages of 13 and 18

  • Must reside in the New England Region or attend a high school in the New England Region

  • All entrants must complete an online registration form

  • All entrants must pay the registration fee of $25 which is non-refundable

College Division

  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 25

  • Must reside in the New England Region or attend a college in the New England Region

  • All entrants must complete an online registration form

  • All entrants must pay the registration fee of $25 which is non-refundable

Graduate School Division

  • Must reside in the New England Region or attend an institution in the New England Region as a graduate student

  • All entrants must complete an online registration form

  • All entrants must pay the registration fee of $25 which is non-refundable

Emerging Professional

  • Must reside in the New England Region and be under the age of 35

  • All entrants must complete an online registration form

  • All entrants must pay the registration fee of $25 which is non-refundable

REQUIREMENTS

High School and College

  • Entrants must prepare 3 art songs

  • Two of the three art songs must be in a foreign language

  • All music must be memorized by singers

  • Entrants should prepare works that are contrasting, displaying a diversity of style, technique, and/or tempo

  • Entrants may chose their first piece, but the judges will choose the remaining repertoire that will be heard

  • Entrants will be allowed to complete their first piece. However, it will be up to the judges as to how much of the remaining repertoire is presented

  • Entrants will be given up to 8 minutes of audition time

Graduate School

  • Entrants must prepare 3 selections, at least one of which must be an aria

  • Two of the three selections must be in a foreign language

  • All music must be memorized by singers

  • Entrants should prepare works that are contrasting, displaying a diversity of style, technique, and/or tempo

  • Entrants may chose their first piece, but the judges will choose the remaining repertoire that will be heard

  • Entrants will be allowed to complete their first piece. However, it will be up to the judges as to how much of the remaining repertoire is presented

  • Entrants will be given up to 8 minutes of audition time

Emerging Professional

  • Entrants must prepare 3 selections, at least two of which must be an aria

  • Two of the three selections must be in a foreign language

  • All music must be memorized by singers

  • Entrants should prepare works that are contrasting, displaying a diversity of style, technique, and/or tempo

  • Entrants may chose their first piece, but the judges will choose the remaining repertoire that will be heard

  • Entrants will be allowed to complete their first piece. However, it will be up to the judges as to how much of the remaining repertoire is presented

  • Entrants will be given up to 8 minutes of audition time

COMPETITION PROCEDURE

  • It is up to the discretion of the entrant to decide which selection they will perform first

  • All arias must be in original key. Art songs may be prepared in an original or transposed key

  • Entrants should provide a copy of all their music for each of the three judges

  • First place winners from previous years are not allowed to audition in the same division. They may audition in a higher division, if requirements are met

Accompanist

  • Entrants may provide their own accompanists for the audition or an accompanist will be provided. If working with the Vox New England provided accompanist, it is the responsibility of the entrant to provide the accompanist with music

  • The provided pianist for vocal auditions will be Yukiko Oba. She can be contacted at yoba@bostonconservatory.edu if you would like to rehearse prior to your audition. This rehearsal will be at the entrants expense

Winners

  • Winners of the competition must perform at the VOX New England A Celebration Of Youth concert on Sunday, March 29, 2020

  • Cash prizes will be awarded at the March concert

  • VOX New England will work with the winners and their teachers to develop 10 to 15 minute program to be presented on the concert
